On the quarterly members’ call yesterday (May 11th 2024), there was discussion of expensive/valuable single Liberian stamps, and the discussion turned to Scott #92 and #93.

I noted that a #93 is currently up for auction through a Swiss house, so, in case anybody is interested, here are details:
•	Auction house: LE TIMBRE CLASSIQUE SA, 31, Route de Troinex, 1234 Vessy - Genève
•	‘Phone: +41 22 760 11 11
•	Scott #93 unused with original gum certified by Friedl
•	Minimum bid CHF500+++
•	End date of bidding: Wednesday May 29th, 2024, 08:00 CEST

I saw this through Philasearch at: https://www.philasearch.com/en/i_9669_4440/4165_Liberia/9669-A11-10419.html?set_sprache=en&suchtext=liberia&search_type=fulltext&pictureview=gallery&postype=all&page=1&ab_datum=2024-04-15&row_nr=19&breadcrumbId=1715523783.5897

I note with amusement that the website of The National Postal Museum describes their example of #93 as “Liberia’s most valuable” (at https://postalmuseum.si.edu/object/npm_1980.0252.1.7.12).

I assume the name John Sacher will sound familiar to those of you who didn't start collecting Liberia only yesterday. Specialized in West Africa, he also wrote two articles on Liberian postal history that were reprinted in the LPS Journal. John Sacher died last summer, and his West Africa pre-UPU collection is now up for auction at Spink in London on December 13.
Naturally, being confined to the time before the UPU much of the material is prephilatelic - with some notable exceptions. Check out these lots:

1871 front to Paris, bearing 1866-69 24c. light green
1868 printed paper wrapper to Paris, bearing 1864 4c. red and 12c. blue
1864 envelope to London, bearing 1864 12c. blue
1862 printed envelope to Boston USA, bearing 1860 4c. red pair and 24c. green (2)
1861 envelope to Bristol, Maine, bearing 1860 6c. red and 24c. green
1860 envelope to New York, bearing 1860 6c. red and 24c. green
1867 envelope to Baltimore, bearing 1860 first transfer 12c. strip of three and a pair

I wish I could afford just one of them!
Do you have a favorite? Please share your thoughts (as soon as you've stopped crying after seeing the prices).

I just woke up and checked eBay and was surprised to see a large number of Cockrill covers up for auction. They are still on Cockrill's album pages. Starting bids are high, some as high as $5000! They are being sold by george_alevizos. My real surprise is seeing these on eBay. I usually see this kind of stuff at the larger auction houses. It will be interesting to see if he can get those high prices for them.

Three weeks ago the complete Liberia collection of former LPS member Luciano Varaschini was up for auction at Gärtner Auktionen, Germany. Starting bid was € 50000. Although the lot contains many unique items, a total of € 61000 incl. buyer's premium was probably too much for anyone to pay, so it didn't sell. A PDF (in high resolution 1.2 GB or low resolution 290 MB) covering the complete collection is still available for download. Anyone interested in Liberian philately should get this PDF and keep it as reference.
Also, if you have any thoughts on the material presented there, this is the place to share them.
