1884 postally used post card
I'm sorting through my very small collection of early Liberia postal stationery and came across one item that may be of interest to others
It's a postally used post card (1882 3c) addressed to Herrn. Vogel at the Kolnische Zeitung newspaper in Cologne Germany. It arrived in Koln on4th November 1884 via Liverpool on the 2nd October
The message on the back is from a Hugo Zoller and reads (as far as my schoolboy German can make out – please correct it if you're able)
Grand Bassa (Republic of Liberia)
14th October 1884
This postcard is for your stamp album. This morning we arrived from Monrovia where I spent 3 days ashore. The President of the Republic informs him of my upcoming articles about Liberia example(?) and that Someone (?) Woermann will be in Monrovia where he will be sending me several examples of what was received.

As far as I can make out Hugo Zoller (1852-1933) was the foreign correspondent, travel and war reporter of the newspaper (which was very pro-colonial) for over 50 years. One article was "The Negro Republic of Liberia" (Die Neger-Republik Liberia). In 1884–85 he was actively involved in establishing German administration in Togoland and Cameroon.

The addition since 2025 is that I've managed to decipher the name of the sender - Hugo Zoller
He was less than flattering about Liberia and its inhabitants and instrumental via Bismarck in encouraging Germany's colonial aspirations in Africa
