Postal Stationery Envelope Size

I was adding some postal stationery to my collection and I noticed that my 1893 3c Governor Ashmun large envelope (Shoemaker #sB4c) is only 228mm x 101mm.  All the references I checked say it should be 109mm.  Is it common for envelopes to vary in size?  Does anyone else have one that is 101mm?

Thanks,
Travis

A certain degree of variation is normal, but 8mm is not. However, all my large envelopes are around 229mm x 101mm, so I guess the sizes stated are simply wrong. I have updated the data on this site accordingly.

    Thanks,
    Manfred.

  • I checked all of my large envelopes and they are all 101mm as well.  It is odd that Shoemaker, Rogers and von Saleski all only mention 109mm in their books.  I will check with some more LPS members and post the findings here.

    Thanks!

  • After checking with several other members of the Liberian Philatelic Society it seems that all the large envelopes are 228mm x 101mm, NOT 109mm as is stated in all the literature mentioned above.  If anyone finds one that is 109mm, please let me know.

    Thanks,
    Travis
