  • These are from a series of photo proofs and essays signed by the designer of this issue, John Webb. There were a total of 30 complete sets (of eight? - not sure now), but most sets have been split up and sold as singles.
  • Sounds like "CLEAR ADDRESSING SPEEDS YOUR MAIL". It is listed on my postmark page as CPm2.
  • Thanks Greg, I have grabbed the scan of Henry's block of 10 for reference. Unfortunately, I can't afford the actual thing.
  • Interesting. The left one has the spacing of the second type, but a normal, flawless "t". The right one has the spacing of the first type. Both look genuine.
  • Travis, your copies confirm my observations: stamps can be assigned to one of two types. Top left is second type, the other two first type. So far, I have no reason to believe that the second type isn't genuine - but I still would like to see a use…
  • Mik, the SS is made up of the - SS design (the decoration/artwork around the stamps) - the stamp centers (printed in the same color as the decoration) - the stamp borders for b) it actually says "... no stamps and all stamp borders in ... [one of …
  • Well, there is the stamps page on my own website.
  • The photo below showing a "Vai princess" was obviously used for Scott #39 et al.: According to the guys who sell this reproduction on eBay the original is part of the American Colonization Society Collection and was created/published ca. 1895 ...…
  • Greg, I do have the 20c official with upright overprint in mint condition, but this is my only copy. I have 4 with inverted overprint unused and used, so I guess you are right about their relative scarcity.
  • These are the two copies from the former Varaschini collection: The ex-Cockrill stamp with the faint SEEPOST cancel is now in my possession. I don't know who bought the other stamp. There is also a note by Harald Liedtke about the #229 "large 2" …
  • Who knows what the old contract between J.W. West and Liberia looked like, but after an interruption of 6 years I could imagine they felt the need to differentiate between the stamps that had been seized by the British in 1914 and remainders that we…
  • Bryant, although this thread is about the 1918 pictorials, just for the sake of completeness: the date of issue of the 2c and 3c stamps isn't the only date Michel and the rest of the world have different opinions on. According to Michel, Scott #183-…
  • Bryant, I would love my stamp with the 1914 postmark to be postally used, but it has full gum.
  • In Bryant's posting, "1915" should read "1914". Liberia placed the order (with J.W. West acting as agent for Berlin) before the outbreak of World War I (July 28, 1914). The ordinary 2c and 3c stamps were sent ahead and arrived in time, while the res…
  • Bryant, I am afraid I was always trying so hard to find postally used that I neglected the early CTOs. My own stock consists of exactly one 1892 $5 stamp with this typical CTO postmark without date, and one 1880 24c stamp with a SON 12.FEB.98 cancel…
